Philip Ii of France: King John
built 627 days ago
Philip of Alsace gave his nice and Artois as dowry to king Philip II of France. In 1191, a new unification of Flanders and Hainault followed under Baldwin VIII (1191-1194), but his power gave him ... ennemies. Baldwin IX took, as many of his predecessors, part in a Crusade, and was crowned Emperor of Constantinople in 1202. The prosperity made Flanders interesting enough for the French King, who had become stronger, to make annexation plans. After the victory of Philip August near Bouvines in 1214, Flanders came more and more under the influence of France. Therefore, Flanders sought protection in England, from which it needed wool as the raw material for the cloth industry anyway.

Philip ... began to war with the Henry II of England, who was also Count of Anjou and Duke of Aquitaine in France. Two years of combat (1186–1188) followed, but the situation remained unchanged. Philip initially allied with Henry's young sons, Richard and John, who were in rebellion against their father. However, news of the fall of Jerusalem to Saladin, followed quickly by the death of Henry, diverted attention from the Franco-English war.

Richard sailed first to Sicily, where he agreed the Treaty of Messina with Philip II (Augustus) of France (1191). In it Richard conceded the French king's feudal overlordship of Richard's French territories. Richard then went to the Holy Land via Cyprus.

King Philip II of France (Michael Balsley) is ... at the Christmas court, and he has his own demands. Alais (Kit Paquin), his sister, has been in Henry’s court since she was young, and she was supposed to have married one of Henry’s sons. Instead, Henry has taken her as his own mistress, and he really doesn’t want to give her up. To further complicate matters, a rather nice dowry came with Alais, and Philip wants either Alais or the dowry back.

With Philip II of France, he stormed Acre. Philip then returned to France, where he began plotting against Richard with the latter's brother John. Richard remained but had to abandon his attempt to seize the strongly fortified city of Jerusalem.

An alliance of European powers, including that of England, became concerned at the growing power of France and her armies and in 1214 went to war with King Philip II. At the Battle of Bouvines, Philip II’s forces inflicted a heavy defeat upon the coalition forces which included those of Otto IV of Germany. The consequence of the defeat was that Philip became one of the most powerful men in Europe.
