The Philadelphia Eagles were named after the symbol that was in the center of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, the National Recovery Act. Originally known as the Frankford Yellow Jackets, the team went through financial privation caused by the Great Depression. During World War II, manpower shortages made it impossible to fill the roster. Therefore the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers merged to form a temporary team called “the Phil-Pitt Steagles”. The eagles are currently members of the Eastern Division of the NFC (National Football Conference) in the NFL.
