built 645 days ago
Phenytoin (FEN-ih-toe-in) is the generic name (non–brand name) of a widely used seizure medicine. Common brand names for this type of medicine include Dilantin, Phenytek, and Epanutin (in the UK), but it is ... sold using the name phenytoin or phenytoin sodium.

Phenytoin is for injection into a vein. It is given by a health-care professional in a hospital or clinic setting. Once seizures are controlled you may be given phenytoin to take by mouth.
Phenytoin is one of a group of hydantoin anticonvulsants that are used most commonly in the management of seizures in epilepsy. It is used in MS to manage painful dysesthesias (most commonly trigeminal neuralgia) caused by abnormalities in the sensory pathways in the brain and spinal cord.
Phenytoin sodium exerts an anti-epileptic action without causing general depression of the CNS. It is believed to stabilise rather than elevate the seizure threshold and to limit the spread of seizure activity.
Alcohol - Phenytoin may be less effective at reducing seizures when combined with large quantities of alcohol. Speak to your doctor for safe use guidelines, and keep your use minimal and infrequent.
In adults, if seizure control is established with divided doses of three 100 mg Phenytoin capsules daily, once-a-day dosage with 300 mg of extended phenytoin sodium capsules may be considered. Studies comparing divided doses of 300 mg with a single daily dose of this quantity indicated absorption, peak plasma levels, biologic half-life, difference between peak and minimum values, and urinary recovery were equivalent. Once-a-day dosage offers a convenience to the individual patient or to nursing personnel for institutionalized patients and is intended to be used only for patients requiring this amount of drug daily. A major problem in motivating noncompliant patients may ... be lessened when the patient can take this drug once a day. However, patients should be cautioned not to miss a dose, inadvertently.
