Phenytoin can ... cause hirsutism.[61] It occurs in about 12 percent of children receiving phenytoin, usually within 3 months of initiating therapy.[62] It occurs on the extensor surfaces of the extremities and on the trunk and face. It usually resolves within 1 year of discontinuing therapy but sometimes does not.

Phenytoin is a weak acid and has erratic GI absorption. Following ingestion, phenytoin precipitates in the stomach's acid environment; this characteristic is particularly important in the setting of an intentional overdose. Peak blood levels occur 3-12 hours following single dose ingestion.

Phenytoin toxicity as a result of 5-fluorouracil administration is not readily reported in the literature. Reported here is a 50-year-old woman presenting with signs of phenytoin toxicity after commencing 5-fluorouracil therapy for rectal cancer.

Phenytoin has ... been examined in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers [17]. Mean healing time was 21 days in the phenytoin group verses 45 days in the control group in which sterile occlusive dressings were used.

Phenytoin increases the metabolism of ethinylestradiol and progestogens, necessitating oral contraceptive preparations containing at least 50 mcg of ethinylestradiol. It induces failure of levonorgestrel implants and mandates that medroxyprogesterone injections be given every 10 rather than 12 weeks.[166]
