Katerina Akassoglou, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, is one of this year’s recipients of the prestigious Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers. The award was given to Katerina at a White House ceremony today by John H. Marburger III, President Bush’s science adviser and director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

The word Pharmacology comes from Greek: pharmakon (φάρμακον) meaning drug, and λόγος, logos, "knowledge". Early pharmacologists focused on natural substances, mainly plant extracts. Pharmacology developed in the 19th century as a new biomedical science that applied the principles of scientific experimentation to therapeutic contexts.[5]
