Pets play an important role in the home and can be wonderful companions to kids, adults and seniors. The bond that forms between a family and their pet is sometimes difficult for non pet owners to understand, but for all of us who have or have had a pet in our home, we know the joy and pleasure these faithful companions can bring.

Inexpensive homemade toys are a great way to keep small pets occupied and active without spending a whole lot of money. Rotating toys though your pets cage will keel the selection of toys fresh and more interesting for your pet. The owner of the gerbils in this video has used a hollowed out coconut shell hung from the top of the cage. Coconut shells make excellent toys for gerbils and other rodents as they are quite tough but safe for chewing. Depending on your location, you may be able to find coconuts at the grocery store for a couple of dollars or less. They take a bit of work to crack open and clean the flesh out but then you have a great combination hideout and chew toy for cheap (and if you can use the flesh too).

Such animals as reptiles are typically considered exotic pets. This may change in the future, as 'exotic' pet ownership is increasing rapidly. Some of these animals, such as green iguanas, large monitor lizards, and large birds, do not make suitable pets for the average person, as they require extensive housing and diet. They can ... become quite aggressive if not regularly handled. Exotic mammals are also becoming increasingly more popular as pets. For example, the domesticated hedgehog has been selectively bred to the point where its physical characteristics no longer directly match its wild European and African counterparts.

Many Brits prefer pets to partnersOnline insurer Swiftcover.com has found that one in three Brits would rather cuddle with their pet than their partner. Thirty-four per cent of Brits prefer to sit on the sofa with their dog or cat. And even for those with current partners, romance may not be on the agenda. One in five pet owners (18 per cent) would rather share their home with their pet than their current partner, and 34 per cent of Brits can't decide which they would rather live with. Pets are just as important to them as their significant other.
