Peter Pan: Captain Hook
built 646 days ago
As the title indicates, this TV show focuses as much on the pirates as it does on Peter Pan. Captain Hook and Mr. Smee traditionally are the only pirates who receive any attention in the story. Yet here, the other crewmembers of the Jolly Roger (Mullins, Mason, Starkey, Billy Jukes, and Cookson) are given distinct personalities and character development. But none could ever hope to overshadow their menacing captain. A real force to be reckoned with, Hook is a powerful, temperamental, cultured, intelligent, and charming pirate with an insatiable thirst for vengeance. Excellent writing and fantastic acting on the part of voice actor Tim Curry (who won a well-deserved Emmy for his remarkable work) make Hook such a cool villain that Peter Pan becomes even more amazing for defeating him time and again.

The fantastical film begins when the hero of Wendy, John and Michael's bedtime stories - Peter Pan, the boy who refuses to grow up - returns to the nursery and invites them on a magical journey to Never Land. With the help of tinker Bell, his feisty sidekick, a dazzling shower of pixie dust and some happy thoughts, Peter teaches them to fly. Off they soar to an enchanted island filled with wonder and adventure. Before they know it, they're knee-deep in a high-flying battle with swashbuckling pirates, led by Peter's archenemy, Captain Hook - Whose time is nearly up against a ticktocking crocodile.

It is traditional in productions of Peter Pan for Mr. Darling (the children's father) and Captain Hook to be played (or voiced) by the same actor. Although this was originally done simply to make full use of the actor (the characters appear in different sections of the story) with no thematic intent, some critics have perceived a similarity between the two characters as central figures in the lives of the children. It ... brings a poignant juxtaposition between Mr. Darling's harmless bluster and Captain Hook's pompous vanity. This technique of tying two characters together was later used in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and the Stephen Sondheim musical Into the Woods, among others.
