A year ago, Peter Lonard tied the first-round course record with a career-best, 9-under 62 (first set by Davis Love III in 2002). His 62 topped the previous best low start by a winner by three strokes (65 by Graham Marsh in 1977 and tied by five others). Lonard’s score ... set the tournament record for high finish by a winner with his final-round, 4-over 75. Arnold Palmer shot a 3-over 74 in the final round when he won the 1969 tournament.
Peter Lonard stands on the verge of re-writing Australian Open and PGA history. Brendan James talks to him about his chances in both events and looks at the contenders lining up to de-throne him as the kingpin of Australian golf.
Still, Lonard's lowest Tour round ever tied Davis Love III for the best opening-day score at the Heritage. He came a stroke from David Frost's 11-year-old record of 61 at Harbour Town Golf Links.

Lonard was one of only 16 golfers to break par in windy conditions on the newly revamped Pete Dye layout. He's been a bit of a weak fantasy play this year with only one top-10 at the Mayakoba (a secondary start when the top players were at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship) and has missed five cuts in 14 starts. Lonard stands just two strokes behind leaders Phil Mickelson and Rory Sabbatini going into Friday's second round.
PeterLonard Lonard had a rough start to the year by missing three cuts in-a-row, but he rebounded last week with a T-22 finish at the Northern Trust Open. The bookmakers in London have him as one of the favorites in this year's field, due his third place finish here last year. Given the thin field at the Mayakoba Classic, he deserves serious consideration by fantasy managers this week.
Harrison Frazar grabbed a share of the first-round lead in the Buick Championship, shooting a season-best 6-under 65 to join Heath Slocum, Peter Lonard and Scott Verplank atop the leaderboard. Corey Pavin, Carl Pettersson, Darron Stiles, Camilo Villegas, Todd Fischer and Ron Whittaker are all one back after rounds of 66.
