Gallagher's segue from stage to film began in 1980 with his feature film debut in Taylor Hackford's The Idolmaker. Gallagher is Jesus of Nazareth, dressed in cowboy chaps and a ten gallon hat because that is the director's vision. On the first day of shooting, Quinn has not been told that Gallagher has the role, and he shows up and winds up getting into a fistfight with the (jerk) assistant director. Then during the shoot, an actor fails to mention that he has never driven a car before, and so he hits the gas instead of the brake and plows into Gallagher.
