Peter Gabriel was born February 13, 1950 in London, England. He started in music by playing drums in rock bands. In 1966, with classmates from school, he founded the group the Garden Wall. This band later became Genesis. Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975 and began a solo career. His latest album entitled, Secret World Live, was released in 1992.

In addition, Peter Gabriel has been involved in a wide spectrum of human rights and environmental issues. Gabriel’s song ‘Biko’ was the first pop song which talked about the effects of apartheid, and in 1988 and 1990 Peter Gabriel was involved in the Nelson Mandela concerts at Wembley. In 1988 Gabriel worked with Amnesty International to set up the Human Rights Now! tour, and toured many countries with Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Tracey Chapman and Youssou N’Dour.

Peter has tried to explain exactly how this song fits into the Mozo caper, but it was all a bit hard to understand. Spencer Bright has ... attempted an explanation, again with limited success. Down the Dolce Vita is essentially a scene setting exercise in the sleepy, yet upmarket seaside village where the story takes place. It follows a group of intrepid, testosterone charged bastions of maleness attempting to cross the sea: a feat that is often attempted without success. At this stage in the story Mozo himself is still an undiscovered tramp broadcasting on the air from his rubbish tip. This then begs the following questions: who is narrating the story from down the dolce vita?

Gabriel's departure from Genesis (which stunned fans of the group and left many commentators wondering if the band could survive) was the result of a number of factors. His stature as the lead singer of the band, and the added attention garnered by his flamboyant stage personae, led to tensions within the band. Genesis had always operated more or less as a collective, and Gabriel's burgeoning public profile led to fears within the group that he was being unfairly singled out as the creative hub of the group.

Gabriel said the creativity fostered by The Shed is related to brain function. "I think there's an old instinctive response from when we were all running around in the forest, that when you're getting a lot of peripheral-vision stimulation that the brain is kicked into a higher gear," he said. "I noticed that on airplanes I don't feel very creative, but I get a lot of ideas in trains and cars."
