Peter Gabriel

Word that Peter Gabriel had left Genesis was leaked to the NME in July of 1975. According to his official statement there were many and varied reasons for his departure from a band which was, for all intents and purposes, just about to crack the big time. Most famous of these resons was PG's "bondage to cabbages"- a half joke at his desire to play the English country squire. Underlying this throwaway soundbite was a real need to escape increasingly demanding schedules and gruelling touring commitments. History may claim that Peter was ahead of the game, bailing out of the progressive rock scene just as it entrered the threshold into "fat supergroup" pretentiousness and alienation from its audience. After all the gob-hurling punk hordes, along with their seething hatred of anything progressive, were only twelve months away.

Singer and songwriter Peter Gabriel fronted the 1970s rock group Genesis before embarking on a solo career that has included the hit songs "Shock the Monkey," "In Your Eyes" and "Sledgehammer." Gabriel co-founded Genesis in 1967 and was with them until 1975. The group was known for their conceptual albums and theatrical stage shows and became one of the best-known "art rock" groups of the '70s. Gabriel's first three solo albums were all titled Peter Gabriel, but are known to fans as "Car" (1977), "Scratch" (1978) and "Melt" (1980). His 1982 release, Security, featured his first top 40 hit, "Shock the Monkey," and showcased his talent at blending global music with modern recording technology. During the '90s Gabriel released soundtrack albums as well as pop records, and made a splash on MTV with the adventurous and humorous videos of "Big Time," "Sledgehammer" and "Kiss That Frog."

Peter Gabriel decided to take his pet monkey, which he named Shock (ergo Shock the Monkey), on a walk to Solsbury Hill. To get to Solsbury Hill from Lovetown (where Pete lives), you have to go Across the River and Down The Dolce Vita. If you get to Mercy Street, you’ve gone too far, there’s No Way Out and you must go back through San Jacinto. As Pete stood atop Solsbury Hill, he didn't climb up The Tower That Ate People, as the drop would put him right back to the start and he'd be more likely to get hit by Red Rain, even though the sky was blue, but instead decided to travel to The Town of Death. In this town, he met his old friend, Moribund the Burgermeister, who’d become the new town mayor. Moribund told Pete that there was an Intruder in the town, who had No Self Control; there had already been thousands of deaths.
