Peter Gabriel: So
built 658 days ago
Gabriel is the only rocker to have actually initiated recording with Apes. Soon after, Sir Paul McCartney jammed with the bonobo apes too. Gabriel very openly discusses his desire to continue a major effort Apenet or Animal Nation where intelligent animals can communicate via internet. The not for profit effort is pending, but active as of early 2008

Along the way, Gabriel's engineer, Hugh Padgham, developed what became the drum sound of the 1980s by combining thick reverb with a fast acting noise gate. Remember when all of a sudden in the early 1980s, when drums (particularly snare drums) started sounding like booming cannons? That sound began on Gabriel's Intruder album (Ironically, the drummer on that session was Phil Collins, who succeeded Gabriel as Genesis' frontman, and would shortly enjoy '80s superstardom of his own.)

Ovo would not be the only project to distract Peter from completing his new studio album. News soon spread that he was working on a complete score for the film Rabbit-Proof Fence. This soundtrack appeared in 2002, while there was no trace of Up. However, there was another live show to enjoy. Peter played the WoMAD festival in Seattle on July 29, 2001, where, incidentally, Melanie Gabriel had her debut as a backing vocalist. On September 27, 2001, Peter’s partner Meabh Flynn gave birth to his son Isaac.

The breaking point came with the difficult pregnancy of Gabriel's wife, Jill, and birth of their first child, Anna. When he opted to stay with his sick daughter and wife rather than go record and tour, the resentment from the rest of the band led Gabriel to conclude that he had to leave the band. "Solsbury Hill", Gabriel's debut single as a solo artist, was written specifically about his departure from Genesis. He ... had a career in building at one point in his life.

Gabriel's solo career received much critical acclaim. Commercially... his output was spotty. By the mid-'80s he had success with "Shock The Monkey", but it was the No. 1 hit "Sledgehammer" that made him a superstar.

His first 4 albums released in England and first 3 in America were titled "Peter Gabriel." The first 3 are sometimes referred to as "car," "melt," and "scratch," based on the album covers.
