Peter Fonda: Ulee's Gold
built 643 days ago
Peter's goal: If you think actor Peter Fonda has gone Hollywood since netting an Academy Award nomination for "Ulee's Gold", you'd be wrong. Fonda leaped at a chance to travel here next month to raise money for an injured friend, Jeff McGeary. McGeary suffered severe injuries while riding his vintage 1946 Indian Chief motorcycle to Montana last fall. McGeary collided with a cow and then lay unconscious in subfreezing weather for 10 hours before being found, covered in frost with a body temperature of 80 degrees. Miraculously, McGeary survived. But he's spent months at Harborview Medical Center and is paralyzed from the chest down.

Fonda's true comeback came in 1997 with Ulee's Gold, Victor Nunez's 1997 exploration of loss and family ties. He won raves for his portrayal of the title character, as well as a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Always one to play by his own rules, Fonda rejected mainstream Hollywood fare to next star in Steven Soderbergh's The Limey in 1999. He ... appeared in The Passion of Ayn Rand as the author's long-suffering husband for which he received a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor.

With the exception of Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (1974), Fonda's career hit a lull in the 1970s and '80s. But in the '90s he rebounded with films such as Ulee's Gold (1997) -- which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor -- and 1999's The Limey.
