Peter Fonda: Easy Rider
built 643 days ago
When Peter Fonda needs money, he brings some memorabilia to the auction block. For example, his American Flag Patch from His "Easy Rider" Jacket or his gold Rolex worn in the same movie. A surprise mega-hit during its 1969 theatrical run, Easy Rider is one of those rare movies that changed the way motion pictures are made and ... defined a new generation. The original, one-and-only American flag patch worn on the back of Fonda’s (Wyatt in the movie) motorcycle jacket, is featured prominently throughout the movie and also its classic poster. Peter kept the jacket after production wrapped, and wore it until it wore out. He saved the patch, however, framed it, and has held onto it for almost 40 years.

Peter Fonda is most famous, of course, for his work in films, as an actor, director, producer, screenwriter, and all-around anti-authority figure. It is not as well known that he was a musician and recording artist, doing one obscure 1967 single, "November Night," written by none other than a then little-known Gram Parsons. As celebrities who didn't actually do much music-making go, he had more influence on the world of rock than almost anyone, as a friend of the Byrds and other heavyweights; a partial inspiration for one of the Beatles' songs; and (with Dennis Hopper) the prime creative force behind Easy Rider, one of the first films in which a hip rock soundtrack was crucial to the movie's impact. It has never been uncommon for entertainers in different media, and for musicians and actors, to mix socially. Peter Fonda was doing so from about the time he began to act professionally. What made him different in some senses from generations that had preceded him in such activities, though, was that he was among the first relatively well-known Hollywood figures to align himself with the rock counterculture.

Peter and fellow riders arrived back from the Poker run around 12:30, and took a short break before greeting Jeff on stage with the Captain America Bike. The replica bike was trailed up from Arizona by owners Ray and Donna Turpin, at their own expense. Ray has spent nearly 25 years restoring and fine-tuning this near perfect replica of the bike used in the Easy Rider film. Peter's comment was that he thought it looked better than the original. The bike was set on a stage with a backdrop painting of a mountain scene from the movie. People lined up for hours to have their picture taken with Peter on the bike.
