Peter was undettered and in 1960 he got his first major television role in The law and Mr. Jones, for which he received an Emmy nomination. He ... starred in a B-movie called Murder, Inc., for which he received an Academy Award nomination. The same year he married Alice Mayo. They had two adopted daughters together. In 1962 Peter received an Academy Award nomination for Pocketful of miracles. He was Emmy nominated for The Price of Tomatoes and this time he won.

Columbo is a popular detective series featuring Peter Falk as Lieutenant Columbo. The character (who never had a first name), and the series are a creation of the writing/producing team of Richard Levinson and William Link. Columbo ran as a television series from 1971 to 1978, but the character had appeared in a short story, a live-television broadcast, and a stage play before making his first network television appearance in the Made-For-Television Movie Prescription: Murder (1968). Originally written for Bing Crosby, the Columbo role went to Falk when Crosby opted not to end his retirement.

Falk is ... known for roles in several films, including his performance as a possible ex-CIA agent of dubious sanity in the Arthur Hiller comedy The In-Laws. He also starred in such films as The Great Race, The Princess Bride, Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire (cast as himself) and the 1963 mega-comedy It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. He also played Guy Gisborne in the 1964 Robin Hood spoof Robin and the 7 Hoods, and starred in a Twilight Zone episode in 1961 called "The Mirror".

Falk entwickelte zunehmendes Interesse an der Schauspielerei und nahm Unterricht. Seine Lehrerin überzeugte ihn von seinem Talent, und er kündigte seine Anstellung. Er ging zurück nach New York und spielte in Off-Broadway-Produktionen mit, sowie in kleinen Fernseh-Produktionen. Ein erstes Engagement für die Leinwand bei der Columbia scheiterte an seiner „Behinderung“, dem Glasauge. 1958 kam dann seine erste kleine Rolle in einem Film der Warner Brothers.

Falk was not a random choice for the role. Reiser wrote the semi-autobiographical script with the veteran actor in mind. It was almost as if Reiser’s father had picked the man who would eventually play him.
