Perugia: Hills
built 201 days ago
Within easy reach of Perugia, there are a number of hill towns worth a visit. One example is Corciano, a small mediaeval town situated on a hill 5 miles from Perugia, on a detour of the road to Lake Trasimeno. Corciano was under the rule of Perugia until the 16 C, when it was annexed to the Papal State and became Corgna family's domain. Corciano is surrounded by a fine circuit of walls and fortified towers and the splendid castle dominates the maze of narrow alleys and flights of steps that connect the piazzas and their beautiful architecture. Some of the public buildings have spectacular interior decoration.

Perugia dominates the Tiber Valley from a high, irregular and rough hill: the particular feature of the land has generated a wide variety of urbanistic situations, giving the town a very special aspect. Perugia is a very ancient town, which rose to power during the time of the Etruscans. It was controlled by the Romans and invaded by the barbarians after the fall of the Roman Empire. In the 11th century a Free Commune was set up, reaching great power and splendor in the 13th and 14th century. After an obscure period of internal fighting, in 1540 it was conquered by Paolo III Farnese and remained under the dominion of the Church until 1860, when it became a member of the Italian State.
