Perugia: Central Italy
built 234 days ago
Festivals & Markets -- Perugia is something of a musical nucleus for central Italy. The fun starts with the rather tame Rockin' Umbria festival at the end of June. For information, contact ARCI-Perugia, Via della Viola 1 (tel. 075-573-1074; fax 075-573-0616). It's followed by one of Europe's most important jazz festivals, Umbria Jazz, which usually runs for 2 weeks in mid-July. Established in 1973, it draws top international names to town for concerts, and instructors from Boston's prestigious Berklee School of Music hold seminars and workshops.

Perugia is one of the principal "art cities" of Umbria and indeed of Italy, and presents a rich feast of architecture, frescoes, paintings and historical artifacts. The location and climate of Perugia, as well as its reasonable size, add to the pleasure of a visit. The Piazza IV Novembre of Perugia is the focus of the town and site of the Duomo, the Cathedral of S. Lorenzo, and the splendid Fontana Maggiore. The Palazzo dei Priori (the Town Hall, encompassing the Collegio del Cambio, Collegio della Mercanzia, and Galleria Nazionale) forms another side of the piazza. Other major sights in and near Perugia are the Church of San Pietro and the Tempio di San Michele Arcangelo, a round church built on the foundations of a Roman temple.

The Province of Perugia recently set up a program for forecasting of ice formation on road surfaces. The program is operated by the University of Perugia and Ecosearch, a Campbell Scientific systems integrator based in Italy. The first part of the program will verify the relationship between meteorological parameters indicating possible ice formation and the actual formation of ice a three selected sites. An additional objective is to determine the variability of road surface temperature.

Perugia has become famous for chocolate, mostly because of a single firm, Perugina, whose Baci (kisses) are widely exported[22]. Perugia chocolate is very popular in Italy[23], and the city hosts a chocolate festival every October[24].

Perugia is just off the A1 autostrada that runs from Rome to Milan. Approximate travel times are Rome 2.5 hours, Orvieto 1 hour, Milan 4 hours, Florence 1 hour. Perugia is ... accessible from other parts of Italy by car via the Autostrada. Additionally, if you plan to stay in Perugia, there is a regional airport, which can be reached through a connection in Milano.

Perugia is one of the most attractive towns in the area of northern Umbria and southern Tuscany both in terms of its ambience and its architecture and should on no account be missed if you are visiting central Italy. Perhaps nowhere else in Italy are the material remains of the Etruscans so clearly evident as in Perugia. The churches and fountain of the main piazza of Perugia are well-known masterpieces, but there are numerous minor churches of great interest, most notably the Tempio di San Michele Arcangelo.
