Pertussis: Antibiotics
built 221 days ago
Pertussis should be treated with antibiotics. Supplements, herbs, and homeopathy are useful as supportive therapies and may help quicken recovery. Talk with your doctor if you are using alternative therapies in addition to medication.

There are four antibiotics recommended for the treatment of pertussis that will shorten the period of communicability. Your doctor may chose one of these antibiotics for treatment. The appropriate antibiotics include either a 5-day course of azithromycin, a 7-day course of clarithromycin or a 14-day course of either erythromycin or trimethoprim/sulfamethoxozale (TMP/SMX). Persons with pertussis should be isolated from school, work or similar activities until they have completed at least the first 5 days of an appropriate antibiotic therapy. The remaining doses of antibiotics need to be taken as prescribed.
The IncP-1 beta plasmid pBP136 from Bordetella pertussis is ... sequenced. It contains 41,268 bp nucleotides and carries 46 ORFs. Two of the ORFs are similar to genes with unknown function from a plant pathogen called “Xylella fastidiosa”. pBP136 plasmid do not contain any accessory genes that code for antibiotics, mercury resistance, or xenobiotic degradation. Its role in the bacteria is unclear and is still under investigation. [9]
In addition, pertussis is treated with an antibiotic. Unless the antibiotic is given early in the course, it doesn't much affect the length of the illness, but is still very effective at stopping its spread. People with pertussis are highly contagious for up to 5 days after starting the antibiotic.

Most care for pertussis patients is mainly supportive, providing assistance with breathing and oxygen supply. Antibiotics, if given early in the course of disease, can ease some of the symptoms and alter the course of disease by helping to eliminate the bacteria from the respiratory tract.

When an individual has pertussis, all household members and other close contacts (for example, day care contacts or overnight guests) should receive preventive treatment with antibiotics. This treatment can help prevent people from becoming ill.
