Effective August 2006, the nursing program requires that all students purchase a personal digital assistant (PDA) for use in all nursing courses. The cost of the PDA will be billed to the student. The nursing program will purchase the PDA pre-loaded with a nursing software package. The nursing program will distribute the PDA to the student. Students are required to utilize the PDA for clinical research and are required to bring the PDA to all clinical experiences. Although many early PDAs did not have memory card slots, now most have either an SD (Secure Digital) and/or a Compact Flash slot. It is noted that, as in the case of the personal computers, many of the owners of the PDAs use them only in the most basic of ways and do not even understand the capability of the instrument. The general public as well as the medical community is only beginning to recognize the attributes of the PDA and its impact.
