Persian language is the official language in Iran. The Iranians call this language 'Farsi'. There is one more thing to add to this short explanation and that is about 'Persian' and 'Iranian'. Remember that all native Persians are Iranian, or at least were Iranian at some point in history (like those in Tajikistan and Afghanistan), but not all Iranians are Persian! EX: All native New Yorkers are American, but not all Americans are New Yorkers! Iran today has wide variety of ethnic groups one of which is Persian.

Persian and its varieties have official-language status in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan. According to CIA World Factbook, based on old data, there are approximately 64 million native speakers of Persian in Iran,[2] Afghanistan,[3] Tajikistan[4] and Uzbekistan[5] and about the same number of people in other parts of the world speak Persian. UNESCO was asked to select Persian as one of its languages in 2006.[6]

Persian belongs to the Western group of the Iranian languages branch of the Indo-European language family, and is of the Subject Object Verb type. Contrary to common belief, it is not a Semitic language. The Western Indo-Iranian group contains other related languages such as Kurdish and Balochi. The language is in the Southwestern Indo-Iranian group, along with the Tat and Luri languages.[8]

Old Persian was contemporary to Avestan, another Old Iranian language. Old Persian is preserved through cuneiform tablets found in the remains after the Achaemenid dynasty (550- 330 BCE). The oldest traces of Old Persian date to the 6th century BCE, but it was spoken until the 3rd century BCE.
