Persian is an Iranian tongue belonging to the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European family of languages. The oldest records in Old Persian date back to the great Persian Empire of the 6th century BC.[30]
The Persian Empire was a series of historical empires that ruled over the Iranian plateau. The political entity which was ruled by these kingdoms is the country of Iran (literally "Land of Aryans ").

During this period, Persia became a centre for the manufacture of scientific instruments, retaining its reputation for quality well into the 19th century. The Persian empire experienced a temporary revival under Nader Shah in the 1730s and 1740s. Nadir checked the advances of the Russians and forced the Afghans to withdraw to their present borders. He ... launched successful campaigns against Persia's old enemies, the nomadic khanates of Central Asia. In 1739, he attacked and looted Delhi, the capital of Moghul India. When Nadir Shah was assassinated by his loyal Qizilbash, his loyal Afghan general Ahmad Shah Abdali, who is also a famous poet of Pashto language, controlled most of Nadir Shah's Kingdom. However, Ahmad Shah's successors could not keep the empire intact and lost most of the western parts of Persia to Zand dynasty.
The Persian Empire expanded from Africa to China and ... to India, until Alexander the Great came along. Persians have a long and eventful history. The Shah of Persia, in the 1930s, changed the name of the country back to its original name, "Iran".

Following the advent of Islam and collapse of Sassanid Empire, Persians came under the subjection of Arab rulers for almost two centuries before native Persian dynasties could gradually drive them out. In this period a number of small and numerically inferior Arab tribes migrated to inland Iran. [5]
Persian doesn't just refer to people from Iran, it refers to anyone who was a part of the great Persian Empire. All that is left of the empire nowadays is Iran, that is why people from Iran are mostly referred to as Persians.
