Perl was created in the mid-1980s by Larry Wall. Its original intent was to fill in the gap between so-called "low-level" languages like C and C++, and the higher level scripting languages like [A]wk, sed, and shell scripts. It has evolved considerably since then, becoming the de facto language of choice for many *nix system administrators and power users. It has found broad appeal on the internet (a mostly *nix based network) as the background code behind many sites on the World Wide Web. A notable example is Slashdot.
Perl has been used since the early days of the Web to write CGI scripts. It is known as one of "the three Ps" (along with Python and PHP), the most popular dynamic languages for writing Web applications (which now ... include Ruby). It is also an integral component of the popular LAMP solution stack for web development. Large projects written in Perl include Slash, Bugzilla, TWiki and Movable Type. Many high-traffic websites, such as bbc.co.uk, Amazon.com, LiveJournal.com, Ticketmaster.com and IMDb.com[16] use Perl extensively.
Some Perl 5 constructs have been changed in Perl 6, optimized for different syntactic cues for the most common cases. For example, the parentheses (round brackets) required in control flow constructs in Perl 5 are now optional:[24]
