Perl 6 is a planned major revision to the Perl programming language. Perl 6 introduces elements of many modern and historical languages. Perl 6 is not intended to be backwards-compatible with earlier versions of Perl, though a compatibility mode is part of the specification.

Since September 1995 VMS 6.2 Perl has been on the Freeware CD (part of the standard installation). As of Freeware 6.0 (December 2003) the Perl release is 5.8.1, the Freeware 5.0 had 5.005_03.

As of 2007, Perl 6 was still under development, with no planned completion date. In January 2008, one implementation of Perl 6, the version targeting the Parrot virtual machine has been renamed "Rakudo" [9].

Perl 6 is still under development. As of Parrot 0.5.2 (released in January 2008) the Parrot developers have made it possible to build a perl6 binary for experimentation and testing, based on the Rakudo implementation of Perl 6.

Starting from Solaris 8 Perl 5 ships standard with Solaris. (Perl 5.005_03 with Solaris 8 (SunOS 5.8), SunOS 5.9 ("Solaris 9") includes Perl 5.6.1, SunOS 5.10 ("Solaris 10") includes Perl 5.8.4 (plus a lot of perl5-porters patches)

Ponie is the project name for Perl 5.12, a bridge between Perl 5 and Perl 6. Ponie will bring Perl 5 to Parrot, the virtual machine at the heart of Perl 6. A project of this size and complexity takes plenty of talent, and plenty of support, to complete. The first phase of the project has come to an end, and a new one is beginning.
