Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer that commonly occurs due to increased exposure to asbestos for a long period of time. There are findings that this cancer develops even without asbestos exposure. This type of cancer affects the peritoneum, which is the lining that protects the internal organs of the abdominal cavity. The peritoneum is made up of mesothilial cells which are the cells affected by cancer. It is a rare form of mesothelioma. Pleural mesothelioma, which is the cancer of the mesothelial cells of the covering of the lungs, is the more common form than the peritoneal mesothelioma.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma is the second most common type of Mesothelioma cases, which is about 10% of the total amount. The lining between the abdomen and abdominal cavity is called the Peritonea and it protects all of the organs in the abdominal cavity when it is functioning properly. When the cancer is present in the lining, it is possible for it to spread quickly to the organs it surrounds if treatment is not given early enough in its’ development. As with the other types of Mesotheliomas, it is rare that diagnosis or treatment takes place early in the cancer’s development. This is partly because most doctors aren’t familiar with this cancer and won’t be looking for it unless you share your past exposure to asbestos with your doctor as part of your medical history.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma accounts for approximately twenty percent of all mesothelioma cases diagnosed annually. There are only several hundred cases of mesothelioma of the peritoneum, and associated abdominal mesothelioma diagnosed each year. When asbestos is breathed in, the small fibers enter the deep recesses of the lung. Some asbestos fibers remain in the lung tissue (known as the lung parenchyma) where they can cause scarring (asbestosis) or primary lung cancer. However, when fibers move from the lung to other areas of the body, including the peritoneum, this may cause abdominal mesothelioma from asbestos. The peritoneum is the lining of the abdominal cavity.

The symptoms for Peritoneal Mesothelioma are very subtle and this adds to the difficulty in diagnosing this fatal cancer. Other than pain (sometimes severe), the only other symptom would be an enlarged or swelling abdomen from fluid accumulation around the tumor(s). Non-specific symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, weight loss, weakness, and bowel obstruction are ... seen in Peritoneal Mesothelioma cases, but these symptoms do not make it an easy diagnosis. If you have a doctor that is familiar with Mesothelioma or has knowledge or your work history that reveals apparent asbestos exposure, this may aid your doctor in a faster, accurate diagnosis. The treatment options for Peritoneal Mesothelioma are the same as Pleural Mesothelioma, which are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma is defined as the cancer that invades the lining of the abdomen. Many of the organs in the abdomen are covered by a thin membrane called the peritoneum. Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma is a cancer of this membrane. Caused by asbestos exposure this type of mesothelioma attacks the peritoneum, or the lining that protects the contents of the abdomen.
Peritoneal Mesothelioma is when the abdominal lining of the abdomen becomes cancerous or malignant and could develop into a full mesothelioma tumor. Take a look at the diagram below to see the abdominal lining, which is ... known as the Peritoneum (marked in blue). The peritoneum is an insulator or covering for all the organs that exist in the abdomen. It is made up of 2 parts:
