Pericles played a leading part in the critical years following 454. His founding of Athenian colonies on the territories of Athens's "allies" was a key factor in converting a coalition into an Athenian empire. He certainly approved of Athens's appropriating the allied moneys, and he advocated their use for domestic purposes. He proposed the recall of Cimon, which resulted in victories over Persia and a truce with Sparta. Pericles's own operations as a military commander in western waters in 455 and 454 were successful.

The play opens in the court of King Antiochus, where Pericles has come to solve the riddle and win the hand of his daughter. He solves it alright, and is appalled to learn of the incest between father and daughter. He wants no part of this, and escapes in fear for his life. Back in Tyre, he decides he better leave before Antiochus makes war on his people to get back at him. When the assassin overhears that he has fled by sea, he is certain enough of his death to report back to Antiochus.

Pericles was entered by Edward Blount on the Stationers’ Register on 20 May 1608. Blount apparently never printed the play. The first quarto was printed by William White and Thomas Creede for Henry Gosson in 1609. The second quarto... by White and Creede for Gosson, appeared the same year. In 1611 the third quarto was printed by S. Stafford.

Pericles knows the answer to the riddle King Antiochus (Sam Tsoutsouvas) has presented to him as a prerequisite to winning the hand of his daughter (Gail Grate). The rub: if Pericles fails to offer the solution, he will be put to death but by exposing it he will reveal the King's incestuous relationship with the daughter. On the other hand, the mysteries surrounding the play itself don't seem to have solutions.
