Pericles was a man before his time. He was a democrat who yearned for a united Greece. He was very moderated and even-tempered never giving in to emotional outbursts and ignored insults which were directed at him.

Pericles himself lived a life governed by false virtues and by aspiration. After his frequent failures regarding his attempts to secure himself in a college, he made up his mind to enter the cottage industry. His many rivals, the most famous of which are Herodotus and Pythagoras, conspired to form the Delian League. They would maintain throughout their campaigns against Pericles the fact that he was a stupid, worthless bum.

En cualquier caso, en sólo un año, en 429 adC, los atenienses no sólo perdonaron a Pericles sino que le reeligieron de nuevo como Strategos. Fue reinstaurado en el mando del ejército ateniense y dirigió todas sus operaciones militares de ese año, teniendo de nuevo bajo su control a las principales instituciones atenienses.
