Perfect Dark is a first-person shooter video game for the Nintendo 64. Developed by Rare and released in 2000, Perfect Dark is seen by many as a spiritual successor to Goldeneye. Set in the future, Perfect Dark features futuristic science fiction weapons and technology. The game stars Joanna Dark, an agent for the Carrington Institute, a research and technology facility that develops weapons and gadgets for military and nonmilitary use. Rival DataDyne HQ is a similar company, but with strong government connections, and seedier practices. The game begins with conflict between Carrington and Datadyne but gradually grows to a global and then galactic scale.
Perfect Dark is not a clone of GoldenEye, but rather the evolution of the game. Admittedly, it runs on an enhanced version of the original Bond engine and does indeed feature a lot in common with its predecessor. But at the same time Rare has spent the last two years making sure that Nintendo 64 owners get the next logical step in first-person shooters and it shows; think beautifully constructed new levels and better AI for starters. Think about a single-player mode that is laid out in such a way that it truly varies depending on what level of difficulty it is played upon -- Agent can be beaten in a day, Perfect Agent will take months. Imagine an intriguing storyline centered around little green men and government cover-ups. Now think about a massively expanded multiplayer mode that enables complete player customization, bots, different bot settings, spectacular new weapons, different player models, nearly 20 deathmatch arenas and more.

The game has been sacked with numerous productions delays, missed release dates, rumors of poor technical performance, and a highly touted 'import-your-own-face' feature via the Game Boy camera that was ultimately dropped amidst controversy and conflicting reasons. The game has been several years in the making and final results are interesting because they highlight some of Rares greatest strengths and weaknesses as developers.

Perfect Dark Zero tells the genesis of Joanna Dark’s involvement with the Carrington Institute. It serves as the prequel to the original Perfect Dark, which was on the Nintendo 64. Joanna, in PDZ, is a bounty hunter working for her father alongside her friend Chandra. Together, they make up the Dark Bail Bonds trio, which is fancy-talk for a group that jets around the world nabbing bad guys. The beginning of the game sees Joanna’s father, Jack Dark, finally allowing Joanna on a mission. Things quickly escalate, thrusting the Darks into the middle of a worldwide battle between the mega-corporation dataDyne and the world’s good guys, the Carrington Institute.

Perfect Dark has spawned a book (DC Comics writer Greg Rucka's Perfect Dark: Initial Vector, from Tor) as well as this soundtrack CD, so it's easy to see that there are ambitious plans for the franchise. This first-person shooter is actually a prequel to the first one, titled (oddly enough) Perfect Dark. The premise is simple enough: war between rival corporations bent on world domination in a dystopian future. Joanna Dark and her father, Jack, get entangled in the battle for Earth's future. PDZ features support for up to 50 players online via Xbox Live, a massive arsenal of weapons and combat-enabled vehicles. Perfect mayhem.

Screenshot for 'Perfect Dark' Perfect Dark is near perfect, when you are talking about gameplay and graphics only. Once you turn the game on you delve into a fantastic futuristic world. The graphics are so lifelike and gameplay so smooth, you almost forget you are playing a video game. But then when you take the first shot the harsh realization falls over you that this game is not for the faint of heart. With just one shot opponents cringe and scream with pain, blood splatters on the wall and floor as you rain on them with bullets. There are a few vulgar words used while you watch your eneny die in his own pool of blood.
