The Pennsylvania Lottery is the state lottery of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It was created by the Pennsylvania Legislature on August 26, 1971 and that October, Henry Kaplan was appointed as its first Executive Director. The Lottery premiered on March 7, 1972.
Established in 1971, the Pennsylvania Lottery is the only US lottery that directs its proceeds exclusively to programs geared toward older residents. Proceeds fund more than 52 Area Agencies on Aging across Pennsylvania. The Lottery ... pays for Pharmaceutical Assistance Contract for the Elderly (PACE), and Pharmaceutical Assistance for the Elderly Needs Enhancement Tier (PACENET).
Besides conducting online games, the Pennsylvania Lottery has many instant games (such tickets are usually referred to as "scratch off tickets"). In fact, approximately 42% of all lottery proceeds are from instant ticket sales. The Pennsylvania Lottery website maintains an updated list. [2]
The five $1 million top prizes must be claimed by presenting a winning ticket at Pennsylvania Lottery headquarters in Middletown, Dauphin County, or at any of the Lottery's seven area offices located throughout the Commonwealth. The five $100,000 prizes can be claimed at any of the Lottery's seven area offices or at any licensed Pennsylvania Lottery retailer. Claims may be filed Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lottery headquarters, and 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at area offices.
The Pennsylvania Lottery does not notify winners via e-mail or any other method when they win a Powerball(R) or other Pennsylvania Lottery game prize. Winners must contact the Lottery when they have a winning ticket. Individuals who win a Powerball(R) or other Pennsylvania Lottery jackpot prize must file a claim in person at Pennsylvania Lottery headquarters to receive their prize. The current scam using the Powerball(R) name and logo is an attempt to access personal information, such as Social Security Numbers or bank account information.
Pennsylvania Lottery The Pennsylvania Lottery was established by the Legislature in 1971. The primary purpose of creating the Lottery was, and remains, to generate funds to benefit programs for the Commonwealth's older residents. The Pennsylvania Lottery remains the only lottery in the nation that exclusively targets all of its proceeds to programs for older residents.
