The Peloponnesian War began in 431 BC between the Athenian Empire (or The Delian League) and the Peloponnesian League which included Sparta and Corinth. The war was documented by Thucydides, an Athenian general and historian, in his work History of the Peloponnesian War. Most of the extant comedies of Aristophanes were written during this war, and poke fun at the generals and events. The war lasted 27 years, with a 6-year truce in the middle, and ended with Athens' surrender in 404 BC.

The Peloponnesian War led to a polarized Greek world. During the war, city-states were either allied with Sparta or Athens. After the war, there was turmoil within individual city-states. The Athenians had created democracies in many of the city-states in the Delian League. Within a city-state, those who supported democracy and those who supported oligarchy came into conflict, each side believing that either Sparta or Athens would aid them. This was a period of intense political conflict, with the imperial tradition passing first from Athens to Sparta, then to Thebes, and so on.Some Greeks became worried about this political atmosphere of constant turmoil, but conflict was too ingrained in the city-states for them to overcome it and work toward peace and cooperation.
Tenth-century minuscule Manuscript of Thucydides's History The History of the Peloponnesian War is an account of the Peloponnesian War in Ancient Greece, fought between the Peloponnesian League (led by Sparta) and the Athenian league (led by Athens). It was fought over 20 years. It was written by Thucydides, an Athenian general who served in the war. It is widely considered a classic and regarded as one of the earliest scholarly works of history. The History was divided into eight books by editors of later antiquity.
