   Shea Stadium opened on April 17, 1964 in Flushing Meadows, Queens as the New York Mets played the Pittsburgh Pirates before 48,736 fans. The $25.5 million stadium marked a new beginning for the young club that had played its first two years at the Polo Grounds. The stadium was originally to be called Flushing Meadow Park but was later named for the popular attorney, William A. Shea, who spearheaded the drive to bring National League baseball back to New York following the departure of the Dodgers and Giants in 1957.

   By the time the St. Lucie Mets defeated the Osceola Astros for the '88 FSL championship, Apodaca and Hurdle were months into a relationship that would blossom into nearly two decades of friendship and successful professional association. They already were finishing each other's sentences then as they do now when certain pitching aspects of the 2007 National League champions require discussion.

   Anna Benson, the wife of New York Met's pitcher Kris Benson was on Howard Stern today. Benson, a former stripper, drew listeners' ire with her obnoxiousness. Benson, noted for screwing in baseball stadiums... admits to having done maybe 30 porn tapes with her husband.
9. Red Sox -- World Series
   The Red Sox won the AL East for the first time in 11 seasons, prompting a playoff series against the California Angels in the AL Championship Series. The teams split the first two games in Boston, but the Angels won the next two games at their home stadium, taking a 3-1 lead in the series. With the Angels poised to win the series, the Red Sox trailed 5-2 heading into the ninth inning of Game 5. A two-run homer by Baylor cut the lead to one. With two outs and a runner on, and one strike away from elimination, Dave Henderson homered off Donnie Moore to put Boston up 6-5. Although the Angels tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, the Red Sox won in the 11th on a Henderson sacrifice fly off Moore.
10. Gibson (Gibson, Bob - Player) -- Games
    In those games, Gibson went 0-9 despite a 2.14 ERA. Had the Cardinals scored but four runs in each of Gibson's 34 starts, he would have gone 30-2. Yes, 1968 was a historically low-scoring season, with only 3.43 runs per team per game in the NL. OK, if the Cards had scored 3.43 runs in each game Gibson pitched, he STILL would have gone 30-4. If they had scored merely three runs in each game, Gibby would have been 24-4. Even if St. Louis had scored only two runs in each game, he would have gone 23-10.
