Pedophilia

For Immediate Release – November 28, 2007 (TORONTO) – Pedophilia might be the result of faulty connections in the brain, according to new research released by the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). The study used MRIs and a sophisticated computer analysis technique to compare a group of pedophiles with a group of non-sexual criminals. The pedophiles had significantly less of a substance called “white matter” which is responsible for wiring the different parts of the brain together.

Pedophilia is the most common paraphiliac act involving the touching of a victim against his or her will or who is unable to give consent. Conservative estimates indicate that 20% of all females and 10% of all males have been molested prior to age 18 years (Finkelhor et al. 1986). In a stratified nationwide study of females in the United States, Saunders (1992) estimated that 21 million adult females have been sexually assaulted, 60% of those prior to age 18 years. According to pedophiles’ own reports regarding children under age 14 years whom they have molested, nearly all molestations in which the child was not touched (e.g., voyeurism, exhibitionism) involved female children, whereas 62% of the molestations in which the child was touched involved male children (Abel 1989). Furthermore, contrary to data from treatment programs for child victims, child molesters report that the vast majority of their molestations do not involve incest, but rather are perpetrated against children outside of the home (Abel 1989). Child molestation is a public health problem of enormous magnitude that necessitates prompt intervention.

National Alert Registry Logo Pedophilia involves sexual attraction/orientation towards children, and usually involves males. Pedophilia is very rare among females. It is characterized by recurrent intense sexual-arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors involving sexual activity with a prepubescent child or children for at least a 6-month period of time. What this means is that the sexual attraction/orientation of the person (usually a male) is toward a child rather than an adult. It has been estimated that sex offenders are often involved with two or more children, and the problem is often a recurrent one.
Pedophilia and the Bush family ... extend to Florida. While Jeb Bush was governor, the Florida Department of Children and Families "lost" a number of computer files and falsified other files implicating state employees and foster parents in serious cases of child abuse. There were also cases of children in state care, including a five-year old Miami girl being "lost." Democratic state legislators in Florida laid direct blame for the incidents at the feet of Jeb Bush.

Pedophilia is considered a paraphilia, an "abnormal or unnatural attraction." Pedophilia is defined as the fantasy or act of sexual activity with prepubescent children. Pedophiles are usually men, and can be attracted to either or both sexes. How well they relate to adults of the opposite sex varies.
Pedophilia may ... be treated with medications. The three classes of medications most often used to treat pedophilia (and other paraphilias) are: female hormones, particularly medroxyprogesterone acetate, or MPA; luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) agonists, which include such drugs as triptorelin (Trelstar), leuprolide acetate, and goserelin acetate; and anti-androgens, which block the uptake and metabolism of testosterone as well as reducing blood levels of this hormone. Most clinical studies of these drugs have been done in Germany, where the legal system has allowed their use in treating repeat sexual offenders since the 1970s. The anti-androgens in particular have been shown to be effective in reducing the rate of recidivism.
