Pearl Jam: Eddie Vedder

Whether or not you agree with the politics, "Pearl Jam" rocks and soars on the strength of the tightest beginning-to-end focus of a PJ album since "No Code". While "Riot Act" and especially "Binaural" felt like a hodge-podge of stellar but weakly related songs, "Pearl Jam" is best listened to as a whole -- and it commands your attention all the way through. The first four tracks charge ahead at full-steam (highlighted by the punchy "Severed Hand), but the album doesn't take flight until "Marker in the Sand", a rumbling verse setting up a winged chorus that adds much-needed musical depth to the album's frantic opening songs. As the RS reviewer noted, "Pearl Jam" carefully balances seething anger at the country's state of affairs with hope for a better future. PJ pulls of the balancing act perfectly. "Darkness comes in waves," Vedder laments in "Life Wasted", while candidly accepting that "this life is a sacrifice" in "Unemployable".

Sure, I have a long-standing affection for Pearl Jam, but Eddie Vedder just sang "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" during this afternoon's Mets-Cubs game at Wrigley Field, and he somehow managed to turn the song into a freaking dirge. (Also, he somehow turned the song's final four words into "at the home ballgame.") Classy of him to wear a Kerry Wood jersey, though! [cubs.com]

Pearl Jam's rejection of rock stardom, their increasingly idiosyncratic records and Vedder's emerging role as an advocate for progressive causes have cost them casual fans; their last album sold one tenth of what their debut did. Does this worry Vedder? Guess. "If we can survive and play music and put out records and play live shows, and live our lives as family members, community members and friends-that's the goal," he says. "If we're able to do it within this industry, that's even better. It could even be a sign that the industry isn't too polluted."

Pearl Jam and Neil Young have been collaborating since at least 1992 when Pearl Jam and Neil played separately at the Bob Dylan tribute ("BobFest") at Madison Square Garden in New York City on October 16. It is believed that this is when Neil and Eddie Vedder first met and possibly Neil invited Pearl Jam to play at the Bridge School Benefit concert. on 11/1/92.

Pearl Jam is a hip-hop trio from Pearl, Jamaica. Their texts focus mostly on suicides of old people. Although the debut album, Stan, wasn't a big hit, the other albums were big smashes. Their only show took place on Eddie Vedder's Bar Mitzvah. As more people wanted them to do more live shows, they decided to become reclusive, and even though everybody knows where they live, they have never been seen again ______ . . . .
