"At a time when few artists can hold an audience of 20,000 with the strength of their music alone, Neil Young and Pearl Jam stand as unique concert experiences. Though the phrase has always been essentially meaningless as a genre tag, Young has often been called "the godfather of grunge," while the Seattle quintet was one of the sound's most successful purveyors when it burst on the scene in the early '90s. Of course the two collaborated on a generally underwhelming album, "Mirror Ball" (1995).
NEW YORK - Pearl Jam wears its emotions on its sleeve on its self-titled eighth album, which, as previously reported, will be released May 2 via J Records. Material for the 13-track set took shape in the wake of President George W. Bush's re-election as well as the United States' invasion of Iraq, the third anniversary of which is quickly approaching.

Pearl Jam Deep Cuts “Better Man” absolutely tore up the charts and, incidentally, represents the moment Pearl Jam jumped the shark in many former fans’ eyes, but “Nothingman” is a better tune. Lyrically, this is one of the best selections in the PJ catalogue, with my personal favorite line being, “Caught a bolt of lightning / Cursed the day he let it go.” For quite a few years, Vitalogy was my favorite Pearl Jam album and “Nothingman” was one of my favorite PJ songs. Today, they’re both still high on their respective lists.

Pearl Jam has broadened its musical range with subsequent releases. By 1994’s Vitalogy, the band began to incorporate more punk influences into its music.[69] The band’s 1996 album, No Code, was a deliberate break from the musical style of Ten. The songs on the album featured elements of garage rock, worldbeat, and experimentalism.[6] After 1998’s Yield, which was somewhat of a return to the straight-ahead rock approach of the band's early work, the band dabbled with experimental art rock on 2000’s Binaural and folk rock elements on 2002’s Riot Act. The band’s latest album, 2006’s Pearl Jam, was cited as a return to the band’s early sound.[57][58]
The only recording Neil and Pearl Jam did together was the Mirror Ball and Merkin Ball albums. (The recording sessions and tour are covered in detail below. To play and listen to a MP3 sample from Neil Young Mirror Ball and Pearl Jam's Merkin Ball.)
Pearl Jam has long been an anti-corporate or anti-corrupt kind of band. This is why they left Sony Records the day their eight album contract was completed. They're now on a smaller record label that is giving them a lot of the creative control and freedoms they've always wanted.
