Pearl Harbor

Today, Pearl Harbor is the main place of interest in the paradise of Oahu. A number of tourists head on to the gates of Pearl Harbor to get a quick peek of the historical place, but to no avail. It currently doesn’t allow visitors since it is still an active military base.

The task force's fuel situation did not permit him to remain in waters north of Pearl Harbor much longer since he was at the very limits of logistical support. To do so risked running unacceptably low on fuel, perhaps even having to abandon destroyers en route home.[36]

Despite gaining exclusive rights to Pearl Harbor in 1887, the United States did not make any attempt to take advantage of their claim on this strategic estuary until well after the turn of the century. It wasn't until the capture of Manila during the Spanish-American War, when the United States needed to establish a permanent way station in the Pacific to maintain control of the Philippines. Then, for the first time, the American government began to understand the strategic importance of Oahu. Annexation soon followed, but even then little was done to fortify the area or capitalize on the vast potential of Pearl Harbor. Finally, beginning in 1902, the entry channel was dredged, deepened and widened to clear an opening at the entrance of the Harbor. Eventually, the 600-foot-wide, 35-foot-deep passage offered access to the Harbor for the full range of vessels in the fleet, including the massive nuclear aircraft carriers.

[I]n a very special way Pearl Harbor became the turning point of the world struggle. The United States undoubtedly would have entered World War II eventually in some other way. No doubt in the long run the manpower, resources, and industrial might of the United States would have prevailed. But Pearl Harbor ensured that American strength would be concentrated into an arrow point of resolution, that the entire nation would stand as one man and woman behind the men at the front.

Of the years following the arrival of Captain James Cook, Pearl Harbor was not considered a suitable harbor due to shallow water. The interest of the United States Government in the Sandwich Islands followed the adventurous voyages of its whaling and trading ships in the Pacific. As early as 1820, an "Agent of the United States for Commerce and Seamen" was appointed to look after American business in the Port of Honolulu. With the cementing of commercial ties with the American continent, another factor to be considered was the endeavors of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. This was particularly true when the American missionaries and their families became an integral part of the Hawaiian body politic.

Over the years, the face of Pearl Harbor has changed dramatically. When the first Westerner, British seafarer Captain James Cook came to the islands in 1778, a coral reef barred the entrance of the place known as Wai Momi, making it unsuitable as a port for deep draft shipping. At that time, nearby Honolulu Harbor was an infinitely more hospitable destination.
