Peanut markets are well established and shortages of this protein-rich crop have occurred. Acreage allotments in the U.S.A. were discontinued in 1981 so anyone can grow peanut, but only previous growers were given allotments for quota-peanut poundage that are eligible for quota-peanut price support. Peanut production in the U.S. during 1982 was limited by legislation at 1,614,000 acres for quota-peanut price supports. Quota peanuts have a higher price support ($642.79/short ton or 32 cents/lb in 1990-1991) than non-quota or additional peanuts ($149.79/short ton or 7.5 cents/lb) whether grown by quota or non-quota producers.

For people with peanut allergy, exposure can cause fatal anaphylactic shock. For these individuals, eating a single peanut or just breathing the dust from peanuts can cause a fatal reaction. An allergic reaction ... can be triggered by eating foods that have been processed with machines that have previously processed peanuts, making the avoidance of such foods difficult.

In the study, the researchers carefully fed the children tiny amounts of peanut starting with 1/40th of a teaspoon until the patient showed a reaction or tolerated two teaspoons of peanut. Reactions included hives, flaring of dermatitis, vomiting/diarrhea, respiratory symptoms or the beginnings of anaphylaxis, marked by throat swelling, difficulty breathing and a drop in blood pressure.
