The BLS’ report deals a severe blow to the ADP’s estimate for private payrolls, anticipating a 140K increase in private payrolls. Even government jobs showed a decline of 18K, the first since July. Construction jobs tumbled by 27K, while manufacturing jobs lost 28K.

Employers in this sector expect to hire at a slower pace through the second quarter, with 23% intending to increase their payrolls and 10% planning to reduce their hiring activity. Across the country, Durable Goods Manufacturing is slated to have a markedly improved hiring outlook over the same quarter of last year. All regions are positive, with the West and Northeast increasing employment activity the most significantly.

Of the 16,000 U.S. employers surveyed, 30% foresee an increase in hiring activity for the second quarter of 2006, while 6% expect a reduction in payrolls. Fifty-eight percent report no change in hiring plans, and 6% have yet to determine their staffing needs.
