Payless and Patricia Field have had a close working relationship for nearly two years; Field has been styling Payless TV and print ads, as well as the seasonal lifestyle signage featured in the stores. Upon hearing the news of Field's Oscar(R) nomination, Payless approached her with the design project and the opportunity. The capsule collection will be available only while supplies last.
Payless is a notorious abuser of historic buildings. They love to rip off historic facades without any concern for the community, replacing them with their ugly-as-sin corporate image of brown seamed metal panels. This kind of corporate greed is usually the first step toward a historic building becoming a teardown candidate, as they have mutilated some of its nicer features. It takes a certain kind of vision to see / recall what it once was.
Among the stores that engage in this practice are: Gap Stores, Banana Republic, Limited stores, Victoria's Secret, Payless Shoes, and American Eagle Outfitters. In 2000, Payless opened five stores in Costa Rica, its Central American staging area; then in Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Just three years later, Payless has almost 200 stores in the tropics, adding Honduras, Panama, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago, Ecuador, Chile and Peru to its roster.

Once a feared force, Payless saw its performance sag in recent years under pressure from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and other discount rivals. Its image suffered too. One analyst said it sold “some of the ugliest shoes in America.” Before Mr. Rubel accepted the job in 2005, he toured Payless stores with his son, then 11, who he says described them as looking “kind of like Mom’s dirty closet.”
