Paul Simon: Songs
built 118 days ago
Paul Simon's concert in Central Park last night was one of those collective ceremonial events, like the Super Bowl or election nights in the past: Everyone was bound together electronically even if they were not there in person. A lot of people were there in person, though, clapping and swaying and singing in almost perfect unison -- after all, some of them had practiced these songs for decades.

Paul Simon says some people describe his songwriting process as being "backward." He often comes up with the musical accompaniment, he says, and only then finds a melody and writes lyrics. That process was at work with some of the songs on his new release, Surprise, which is a collaboration with electronic-music pioneer Brian Eno.

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Paul Simon's famous song claims "there must be fifty ways to leave your lover," but lists only five. "They say that breaking up is hard to do," sang Neil Sedaka, but these B&Bs make Valentine's Day a little easier for jilted lovers and the 89 million single Americans. Simon was born in Smithtown, NY on Long Island, a fact he later referenced in his song "I Am Iraq, I Am Long Island." Some claim he was born in Bayonne, New Jersey, but these people are confused and have actually mistaken Simon for Chuck Wepner. This is an easy mistake to make as both men are very tiny indeed. Simon was reportedly 8" inches tall at birth and weighed just under one pound, despite his mother's having taken him to full term. This has led some to theorize that Simon is a marsupial; most evidence... suggests that he is indeed a mammal, albeit an unusual one. As a young boy, Simon performed with the Ringling Brothers Circus as a stand-in for Tom Thumb, who was often too drunk to perform his act (which consisted of screaming "Whoooooooaaaaaaah!"

Paul released his latest album, You’re The One, on October 3, 2000. The songs on You’re The One build on the styles of Graceland, Rhythm Of The Saints and The Capeman, blending a new, narrative lyric style with a more guitar-oriented sonic tapestry. The album features 11 tracks, and the musicians involved worked with Paul throughout the 1990s. A small tour of Europe took place in October, followed by a short North American tour in November and December. In the summer of 2001, Simon headlined a double-bill tour with Brian Wilson, mastermind of The Beach Boys.
