Paul Simon remarried in May of 2001 to Patricia Derge. Both Sen. Simon and his second wife were widowed. The marriage lasted until his death 2-1/2 years later at the age of 75. His widow is ... the widow of former Southern Illinois University president David Derge.

Extra credit: Simon married singer Edie Brickell in 1992. Previously he was married to actress Carrie Fisher (1983-84) and Peggy Harper (1970-75)... Simon wrote and starred in the 1980 film One Trick Pony. He had a small role in Woody Allen's Oscar-winning 1977 film Annie Hall.

Following his defeat, Simon became an adjunct professor at Sangamon State University in Springfield, Illinois in 1973, where he taught a course entitled "Non-Fiction Magazine and Book Writing", drawing upon his own experience as the author of four books. He taught at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1973.

Now 65, Simon says his latest CD was inspired in part by the terrorist attacks of 2001 and subsequent changes in world politics. "Because I was writing post-9/11 and because I had passed my 60th birthday," he tells Block. "I was more than usually immobilized and having to think about just what it was that I wanted to say in a world that was permanently altered.
