Having spent the early seventies writing and performing poetry, subsidised by rock journalism, 1975 saw the release of Smith's first album "/Horses", produced by John Cale, formerly of the Velvet Underground. The record fused rock and roll, early proto-punk rock with spoken poetry and is widely considered one the rock's greatest debuts. As Smith toured the United States and Europe, with the newly christened Patti Smith Group, punk's popularity grew and the second album Radio Ethiopia reflected this with a rawer sound.

Looking ahead to next year, on Monday, January 21, the Y will present Seven, a group of monologues based on the oral histories of women; the playwrights will include Anna Deavere Smith. On Wednesday, February 20, Grammy Award winner Paul Simon, who wrote the Broadway musical The Capeman, will talk with U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins. Finally, on Monday, March 3, Christine Baranski and the cast of TFANA´s upcoming production of Antony and Cleopatra will read scenes from the play and join in a discussion with director Darko Tresnjak and artistic director Jeffrey Horowitz.
