Smith eventually left the hectic schedule of Rockdom to raise children during her marraige to MC5 alum, Fred Smith. After a time, she re-entered with a warm-up album, the less than stellar Dream of Life. She laid off for a few more years before returning after the devastating death her husband with the stunning Gone Again. Her continued output has been extraordinary creating a body of work that will live on.

Best known for her influential albums of the 1970s, including Horses (1975) and Easter (1978), Smith is ... a performance artist, poet, and visual artist. She took a hiatus from recording in 1980 that was interrupted only by 1988's Dream of Life until the releases Gone Again (1996), Peace and Noise (1997), Gung Ho (2000) and Trampin' (2004).
