The FDA is currently investigating 120 deaths and serious side effects related to the use of fentanyl patches. The FDA issued a public health alert regarding the use of these patches which are manufactured by Janssen, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson under the trade name (Duragesic®). The patches are ... available in generic form by various other manufacturers under the name fentanyl patches. The FDA has not stated the reason for the deaths, however some of the deaths have been related to accidental overdose. The agency is working closely with the manufacturers of these products and investigating the circumstances surrounding the use of the patches to determine if the deaths are related to inappropriate use of the product or factors related to the quality of the patches. For this reason the FDA is cautioning that both patients and their physicians be aware of the appropriate use of this medication.

The Agency has been examining the circumstances of product use to determine if the reported adverse events may be related to inappropriate use of the patch or factors related to the quality of the product. It is possible that some patients and their health care providers may not be completely aware of the dangers of these potent narcotic drug products and the important recommendations regarding their safe use.
