Of the two critical patches released Tuesday, update MS06-004 provides a fix for a vulnerability in the way IE handles Windows Metafile (WMF) images, used by some CADs (computer-aided designs). The flaw could allow an attacker to construct a WMF image that could allow remote code execution if a user viewed a malicious Web site, e-mail or e-mail attachment. If successful, an attacker could take control of an affected system. The update is critical for users of Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 4 running on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, said the bulletin.
Microsoft says that the four patches that have been postponed, after having been announced only last Thursday, will be released on a subsequent Patch Tuesday. All four of them apparently concern Windows problems. One of them ... affects the Visual Studio development environment and another also relates to Office. One of the patches concerns a security hole in Windows that is considered "critical", with the others being categorized as "important". Microsoft did not say why it has postponed the patches, so close to their expected release date.
Microsoft issued two patches to fix flaws in Windows, one of which the company said could let bad guys hijack vulnerable PCs. The more serious of the two affects Windows XP systems. Another patch corrects a critical flaw in Microsoft Publisher. If you use a Windows system and do not have your machine set to fetch Windows updates on its own via Automatic Updates, point Internet Explorer over to Microsoft Update to download and install these updates.
Many of the Microsoft patches need to be applied in a particular order. If they have been applied out of order, they can cause some of the patches not to be effective. There are warnings on many of the knowledge base articles that describe the patches. You need to visit the Microsoft Knowledgebase and see if there is a preferred order for applying the patches. They ... have a tool called HFNetChk that can help you determine which patches need to be re-applied.
The Windows 2000 i386 folders used for the installation of CSCE 5.3r1 have appropriate security patches integrated into them up to and including those patches in the Microsoft Security Bulletin for June 2005. The standard i386 folders will continue to be updated to include the latest security patches so that clean installations of CSCE 5.3r1 should be securely patched. However, it is necessary to keep existing installations of CSCE 5.3r1 up to date with the latest security patches and two mechanisms are provided for this purpose.
