Passchendaele
built 71 days ago
The attack at Passchendaele was Sir Douglas Haig's attempt to break through Flanders. Haig had thought about a similar attack in 1916, but the Battle of the Somme occupied his time in that year. However, one year later, Haig felt able to launch such an attack. His main aim was a breakthrough to the coast of Belgium so that German submarine pens could be destroyed. Admiral Jellicoe had already advised both Haig and the British government that the loss of shipping (primarily merchant) could not be sustained and that Britain would face severe problems in 1918, if such losses continued. Haig's plan, to sweep through Flanders to the coast, did not receive support from Britain's Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, but as the Allies had no other credible plan, he gave his agreement for Haig to carry out his plan.
The WFR Badge, Click here for WFR home page The third battle of Ypres, known forever as Passchendaele 1917 was one of the great conflicts of the first World War. A hundred days of heavy fighting resulted in over half a million Allied casualties for but a gain of only a few miles. The dead comprised mainly British, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand and South African troops and on the great memorial wall at Tyne Cot Cemetery are inscribed the names of 35,000 British and New Zealand dead who fell at Passchendaele. Many of the missing are buried in military cemeteries about the Ypres Salient as 'A Soldier of the Great War' and 'Known to God', but most lie still undiscovered in Flanders Fields.
BARD Icon The Passchendaele-Class Transport has it's origins in the mists of antiquity. The original design was produced by the Terran Confederation from AD 2110 (-2411 Imperial). The Passchendaele-Class was the first of a series of transport starships designed and built by the Starbus-Lockheed Consortium for the Terran Confederation Navy and commercial interests. A relic Passchendaele-Class (the Meekatharra) was discovered in an underground storage facility in 1179 by Medoci archeologists. The facility is believed to part of the orignal naval base established by the Terran Confederation during the Interstellar Wars. The Meekatharra, although lacking jump drives, served as the pattern craft for the Passchendaele-Class.

The battle of Passchendaele began on July 31 1917, with a huge assault of Allied artillery. This barrage warned the Germans of the coming attack and ... turned the battlefield into a mess of craters. With unusual heavy rain the entire area was transformed into a sea of mud. The soldiers slept in the mud, crawled in the mud, fought in the mud and drowned in the mud. The mud also clogged the rifles, ruined the food and rendered artillery use.
[T]he offensive at Passchendaele was launched on the 18th July 1917 with a bombardment of the German lines involving 3,000 guns. In the 10 days that followed, it is estimated that over 4ΒΌ million shells were fired. Many of these would have been filled by the brave Lasses of Barnbow.
