Paris is the center of many major newspapers and periodicals, as well as all the major French radio and television stations. Elegant stores and hotels, lavish nightclubs, theaters, and gourmet restaurants help make tourism the biggest industry in Paris. Other leading industries manufacture luxury articles, high-fashion clothing, perfume, and jewelry. Heavy industry, notably automobile manufacture, is located in the suburbs. About one quarter of the French labor force is concentrated in the Paris area.

Ornate Métro sign Paris is of course one of the great fashion centers of the Western world, up there with New York, London, and Milan, making it a great place to do clothes shopping. For the high end, the area around Place Vendome is known for its jewelery shops as e.g. Cartier. Rue de Rivoli from Louvre to Place de la Concorde has a number of sophisticated shops. And of course you shouldn't miss Gallerie Lafayette and Le Printemps (both in the 2nd close to the Operahouse) and BHV which you can find in the Le Marais district in the 4th near the Hotel de Ville. Owing to the its history of as a mostly Jewish neighborhood most of the shops in much of Le Marais are open on Sundays.
