Paper Dolls: Artists
built 351 days ago
[PAPER DOLL COLLAGE 16K GIF] Paper dolls have been used for advertising, appeared in magazines and newspapers, and covered a variety of subjects. Many fine artists have created paper dolls over the years... qualifying them as a true art form. They have become highly sought after collectibles, and as the vintage ones become more scarce, there are many wonderful new examples being created by contemporary artists.
Paper doll with clothes Paper dolls are figures cut out of paper, with separate clothes usually held onto the dolls by folding tabs. They have been inexpensive children's toys for almost two hundred years. Today, many artists are turning paper dolls into an art form.
The 1900s saw an explosion of paper dolls in many lady's and children's magazines. Lettie Lane, painted by Sheila Young, made her entrance in Ladies' Home Journal in October 1908 and ran until July 1915. The pages included Lettie, her friends, her family, their servants and accompanying stories. The Lane family became well-known and loved all across America. Ladies' Home Journal continued printing paper dolls through 1948 by a variety of artists including Lucy Fitch Perkins and Gertrude Kay.

Artist, author and designer Lynne Perrella, has invited over 50 mixed media artists to contribute to this book of over-the-top imaginative interpretations of the human form. Far more than paper dolls, this selection of thought-provoking and innovative “paper personas” will awaken your urge to make artwork that is meaningful, expressive, and full of story-telling.
