The Northern Californian alt-metal group Papa Roach consists of Coby Dick, Jerry Horton, Dave Buckner, and Tobin Esperance. They formed in 1993 and began releasing EPs soon after, including 1994’s Potatoes for Christmas and 1995’s Caca Bonita. By 1996, the group replaced original bassist Will James with Esperance and hired a new manager; the following year, Papa Roach released their first full-length album, Old Friends From Young Years, which became a surprise hit on local radio. The band’s regional success led to more prominent gigs, including dates with Suicidal Tendencies, Sevendust, and Powerman 5000, and a deal with Dreamworks Records, which released Papa Roach’s second album, Infest, in early 2000. The album went triple-platinum thanks to the success of the single “Last Resort.” Two years later, frontman Coby Dick opted to go by his given name of Jacoby Shaddix. A second album, lovehatetragedy, appeared in June 2002.

The formation of Papa Roach began in January of 1993, when Jacoby Shaddix (vocals) and Dave Buckner (drums) met on the Vacaville High School football field during a intense match, where the two ended up talking about music. They were later joined by Mark Rabinovich (bass) Dr. Zorg (trombone). completing Papa Roach’s first ever line-up. They decided to enter the school's talent show, where they performed a cover version of Jimi Hendrix's famous song, Fire. They ultimately didn't win the contest. The band's name comes from Shaddix's step-grandfather, Howard William Roach, who was nicknamed Papa Roach.

In April 1998, Papa Roach released "5 Tracks Deep", and E.P. containing five songs which sold 1,000 copies within the first month after its release. This CD exemplifies the natural growth in musicianship and song-writing ability within band since "Old Friends From Young Years" was recorded 18 months earlier. The songs "Revenge in Japanese" is a perfect example of the Papa Roach trademark sound where hip-hop verses lead to a catchy radio-friendly chorus. This results in a song with both energy and emotion that will attract diverse crowds of people.

In 1993, No Cal’s Papa Roach got their start as a Frat/Party outfit with an ear for the Beasties,Urban Dance Squad, the DK’s, All, and of course, Black Flag. Like Rawk Scienticians, P. Roach spliced together their love for Funk with their deference to old skool SFHC and came away from the loudness lab with an infectious groove that combines the two styles. Beginning with 1993’s Hit It, soone the band was self-releasing EP’s left and right and nailing down clubgigs and house parties around the Bay Area.

On its fourth major-label album, THE PARAMOUR SESSIONS, Papa Roach continues in the vein of its previous outing, GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER, by once again downplaying its rap-metal roots in favor of straight-forward, hard-charging heavy rock. Although vocalist Jacoby Shaddix throws rap-like cadences into the verses of the surging lead single "To Be Loved," the song breaks into a soaring chorus, revealing the California-based band's knack for melody. This notion is furthered on "The World Around You," a brooding mid-tempo track, and the dynamic "Forever," which moves from quiet passages of chiming guitar lines (courtesy of ace six-stringer Jerry Horton) to a full-blown anthem. Though some may miss Papa Roach's hip-hop leanings, PARAMOUR proves that the group is at its best when sticking to the basics.
