Pandora: Box
built 648 days ago
According to myth, Pandora was an artificially-created woman (the "first" woman, in fact), when Zeus became enraged that Prometheus gave humans the power of fire. He had all of the gods imbue Pandora with their traits (beauty, weaving skills, etc.), and then gave her a box which he instructed her to never open. Curiosity got the best of her, and when she opened it, a multitude of plagues emerged to attack mankind. She closed the box too late, and only one thing remained in the box, Hope.

Pandora is the character from Greek mythology who opened a jar (or box) and released evil and woe into the world. Doesn’t sound like good material for a name, does it? Isn’t calling a music service Pandora kind of like calling a women’s athletic shoe Incubus?

Powers/Abilities: Pandora has an incredibly long lifespan, although she is not entirely immortal. She does age, but at a rate much slower than a normal human. She ... has the power to take on a form familiar to those near her through a form of hypnotization, and always takes on a form much younger than she really is. Pandora also has mind-control over the creature(s) that reside in her box.

Pandora's name comes from Greek mythology. Pandora was the first woman, and was given to humankind by Zeus as a punishment (oh those wacky ancient Greeks!) for Prometheus' theft of fire from the gods. Pandora was given a box that contained all of the evils that could plague people. Out of curiosity she opened it... releasing all of humanity's ills into the world. Pandora's tale is not a happy one! She was also the wife of Epimetheus.

[D]eep inside her, Pandora knew that her promise must not be broken. Her better sense finally overcame her ardent curiosity and she removed the box from the table and concealed it in a dusty hidden storeroom. This made matters worse - she found herself walking by the storeroom and pausing at the doorway, as if the mysterious golden box was calling to her. Sometimes she would enter the room and hold the box for a guilty moment, then rush out and lock the door. This was killing her!

Definition: According to myth, the first Athenian woman was Pandora. Unlike the first Athenian citizen, a male, the first Athenian woman, commonly known as Pandora, was crafted by Hephaestus in his forge. Athena provided Pandora with skills in the womanly arts and made her dangerous. Zeus, who ordered her creation, gave her as a gift and a curse to mankind. Thus Pandora can be said to have had three parents. Pandora is better known as the woman whose curiosity got the best of her when she opened the forbidden box out of which came all the evils of the world and one good, hope.
