Paltalk, a video-based community with over 4 million users, today launched Screening Rooms. Socialcasting, as defined by Paltalk, brings together programming and video content with social networking and live interactive community. Screening Rooms allow anyone to watch shows and pre-recorded video content, either licensed or user-generated, in a public or private video chat room with up to 5,000 other Paltalk members. In the Screening Room, viewers can watch synchronized video content together while interacting with each other in the room through voice, video and text chat as the video plays. Screening Rooms are available in beta starting today and will be offered in general availability later this year.

The Paltalk patents asserted against Microsoft protect innovations concerning systems and techniques for implementing messaging and communications with groups of users, such as groups of players of online games. Paltalk's complaint claims infringement of U.S. Patents No. 5,822,523 and No. 6,226,686. Paltalk seeks damages and a permanent injunction against Microsoft's alleged unauthorized use of Paltalk's patented technology. The complaint outlines that Paltalk's technology covers a number of aspects of online communications, including gaming communications through a group message server to maintain a consistent environment for all players, as well as establishing groups for online game play.

Paltalk became popular after Firetalk, an earlier voice/music chat program, became unable to maintain operation due to a lack of adequate funding. Most Firetalk users migrated to Paltalk, although others moved to other chat programs. After Firetalk went bankrupt, Paltalk bought Firetalk and e-mailed all Firetalk users inviting them to join Paltalk. At that point... it was moot as most had already joined or moved on.
