Paltalk, the company that services the largest online video chat community on the internet, announced today that it has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Microsoft in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. According to Paltalk's complaint, Microsoft infringes several Paltalk patents concerning group messaging systems. Paltalk seeks damages and a permanent injunction prohibiting Microsoft's continued infringement.

In its court filing, Paltalk alleges that Microsoft's Xbox Live (whether accessed on the Xbox or the 360) infringes on two of its patents. The company has suffered damages "in at least the tens of millions of dollars," which raises obvious questions about why they waited four years to file the suit (Xbox Live was launched in late 2002).
Paltalk certainly faces a lot of competition. And with more and more companies offering as much for free as possible, it’s not clear if people will keep paying for videos, even though the add-ons such as voice and video chat are not something easily available on sites like YouTube or MySpace.
